Summary: Very poorly built printer
Comment: I've previously had a epson stylus photo 750 which lasted 5 years. finaly i replaced it with a c86 in march this year
the printer has developed a fault within 3 sets of cartridges that causes the print head to smack off both sides of the inside of the printer trying to reach what it thinks are both sides of the page being printed.
Epson have offered me a refurbished printer but that will be of little use because i have lost complete confidence in their products.

Summary: I like my C86!
Comment: My previous printer (Epson 440) died after six years of sterling service. When I came to replacing it I was searching for a printer that could connect without USB (why buy a new PC when it still does what you need it to?!) - the C86 is one of the few still on the market that has alternative connections. After several months of use I'm still very happy with it.

Regarding ink usage, the manual prepared me for a speedy drop in levels on the first cartridges so it wasn't unexpected (the printer keeps a resevoir of ink in itself so when the cartridge runs out the print quality doesn't). The software warns when there's 20%, 10% and 5% left - you don't need to replace until it's empty. And Epson ink seems to be the cheapest out of all the makes, it's why I stayed with Epson (see choicestationery.com for instance).

To summarise, Epson=great! C86=great!

Comment: I totally agree with the first review. I bought this printer last week to replace my C64 which had died after only 14 months and the repair would have cost the same as a new printer. The only reason I bought another Epson was in order not to loose my almost full ink cartridges and the still sealed set on my shelf (total cost of that lot almost as much as the printer). I put in the cartridges and it showed their correct level - after the initial ink charge it claimed black was empty I replaced it and suddenly blue was supposedly empty - and so on, until the replaced black cartdrige (new and full) claimed to be empty. I have now wasted two sets of cartridges, have a full set in there which shows as virtually empty and I haven't even printed anything yet.

DON'T BUY EPSON - I've now got stung three times (my very first Epson printer also developed a fault after less than 18 months - only the sheet feeder but a fortune to replace the faulty part...)!

Summary: SLOW COLOUR PRINTING & EXPENSIVE INKS
Comment: I bought the Epson C86 printer only 2 weeks ago with the idea that the seperate colour ink cartridges would save me money when compared to other printers. I was wrong, the Epson printer sofware tells you when the ink needs replacing and won't function until this is done even if there is still some ink left. On taking out the cartridge to replace with a new one, I took the time to open up the ink tank with a knife and to my astonishment there was still approximately 30% ink left. I have other printers from HP and Canon and by far the worst for costs is the Epson. HP has a very long lasting black cartridge and Canon for me are the best printers for quality, speed and economic inks. I did a comparison test for speed with a cheap Canon i320 on high quality colour print against the Epson and the Canon was the quickest by a long way. The only possitive points for the Epson are the physical looks and reasonable print quality.
