Summary: Good performer
Comment: I was looking to replace my Canon scanner with something a bit faster and better quality when I saw a review of the Epson Perfection 3490 in Computer Shopper. While searching Amazon for it I came across this scanner which fitted my needs better because of the motorised film loader.
It was delivered quickly and in the 5 days I've had it I've scanned hundreds of negatives. The quality is very good for a flatbed and it's easier than opening up the lid and loading the strips into a negative holder.
If you scan at very high resolution be prepared for a long wait. I made that mistake with the first strip which took 40 minutes. Since then, I scan at 600dpi 6x4 which takes about 9 minutes plus the preview. When I find a negative I really like and might enlarge I'll scan at higher resolution.
I can't comment on scanning photos as I've not done any yet.

Pros - good quality, easy loading, easy to use software
Cons - noisy motors, sometimes gets confused with dark negatives on automatic preview.

Summary: Good scanner, But......
Comment: Having had the scanner for a short while I find it excellent. the quality of the copies are good. If you want to use it automatically, then good copies. If you want to do more for yourself you can. But.... why have Epson designed a scanner where, whichever edge you use to align say a photo, it crops the edge slightly? Epson would probably say 'Move the work to the centre' but this then looses the alignment of a straight edge which is surely an important feature in a scanner. (Next email going to Epson).

Summary: automatic scanning can be frustrating
Comment: I bought my scanner particularly for the purpose of scanning B&W negatives. Sometimes a strip can be previewed and scanned without problem. More often I find that the preview is just fine; but the actual scan at high resolution doesn't get the alignment of the frames right. So one has waited say 12 minutes for a scan to find it useless and have to delete the files and start again. And it happens Again! and Again! It doesn't allow the strips to be aligned manually. This is time consuming and frustrating. If you want to scan mounted slides, then you will not experience this problem, If you are more interested in the scanning of paper material and the odd slide and maybe (if ever) a strip of film, then great. But if you want really want it for scanning strips of film at higher resolutions, and you already have a flat scanner then you should perhaps consider a Plustek 7200 - even if more expensive - I am.

Summary: Email button does not work with MS Outlook
Comment: I asked Epson why the email button on this scanner would not work with Microsoft Outlook. At least they had the courtesy to reply, only to state that they did not support Microsoft Outlook and had no future plans to do so! How many users worldwide use Outlook? I could not believe this response. It only works (apparently) with Outlook Express which I do not use. I even tried editing the registry to point the scanner to the right file, to no avail. I guess most other Epson scanners have the same fault - caveat emptor - and sorry I bought it.
