Customer Rating: Summary: Useless! Comment: Not only does this device not allow the use of all functions of my canon MFP, as it states, it also blew the fuses on my surge protector and main fusebox.
It's gone straight back
Customer Rating: Summary: Fantastic but one pitfall. Comment: Works just as advertised:- I can scan and print with my Canon MP610 just as if directly connected, using a desktop or a laptop.
There is one pitfall not made clear in the instructions.
BEWARE!
You must use the device manager to 'connect' if you want to scan.
YOU MUST DISCONNECT before it will print!
You must also disconnect from one computer before connecting to another for scanning.
As others have said it helps to have a minimal knowledge of your network.
Tiny and unobtrusive,I would highly recommend this.
Customer Rating: Summary: 5 stars very well earned ! Comment: After a lot of research and reading some very helpfull reviews i went with this Edimax print server.
Setup was indeed helped by some very clear step by step instructions provided. Now its installed each PC appears as though it is connected to the printer directly.
This product is well priced and so far is very reliable.
5 stars very well earned !
Customer Rating: Summary: Works perfectly! Comment: This very small and compact unit works well. It was easy to physically set up. The software loaded perfectly and the (fairly) easy-to-follow installation program did the business nicely. I checked their website first to ensure that my multi-function printer/scanner would work and it was fine! I can now scan and print easily and effectively from three different computers and laptops in my household. Unlike some previous reviewers, I have not found any issues with slow response for printing or scanning. The bi-directional print communications between the printer and the computer does take a few seconds to engage, so the print job might well start before the PC can detect how much ink is left etc. This is not a problem!
For those users who take their company laptop home - a few hints (sorry, but without patronising you, you will need to be somewhat tech-savvy and familiar with IP protocol): If you have a company laptop, especially from a large and (well) organised company, then your laptop will probably be set up for your network back at the office! If this is the case, then I suggest the following: First, install the driver/software supplied with your printer onto your laptop. Then plug the printer directly into a USB port on your laptop and install the printer in the usual manner (most, but not all, companies will have given you sufficient rights to do this). Send a test page to ensure that the printer is installed correctly. Now unplug the printer from your laptop's USB port. Then install the Edimax printserver as per the instructions, physically connecting the Edimax unit to your printer and your wired home network/hub/router/crossover cable when prompted. When the instructions tell you to choose the printer that you have from the long list that is provided, (hopefully) Windows XP will detect that the drivers for your printer have already been installed and will use these. I also suggest that you do NOT choose DHCP to assign an IP address for the Edimax unit (this can be changed in the Edimax server software/utilities program - click 'refresh' after you have changed this option). Instead, if you are using the standard IP address range that Windows XP uses, then select a high numbered IP address such as 192.168.0.254 for the Edimax printserver and the same IP address for the TCP/IP port during installtion. I hope that this helps you...it worked for me. If you do not have sufficient rights to install software on your company laptop, you might be able to persuade your IT boffs at work to install it for you (take the Edimax unit in with you, along with the installation software). If you do not have sufficient rights even to install a printer from 'control panel', then basically, you are pretty stuffed and this unit is not for you!
At the end of the installation process, if you have been successful, you should see your printer listed twice in the printers menu of Windows XP. The one that has 'copy 1' in the title of the printer is the one that works via the Edimax printserver. The other one will work if, for some reason, you decide to connect your printer directly to your laptop via USB, which might be useful should the Edimax unit die on you sometime in the future. Have fun.........
Customer Rating: Summary: not very good Comment: Having checked with Edimax that my printer was compatible with this device I bought it because it allowed bi-directional data flow and would allow printer ink status and other stuff to show on linked pc's. Conncting it was fine and the software installed ok. The server manger software recognised the print server but nothing I could do would get the printer to print anything through the server. The instructions were very poor and badly translated. I messed around with IP addresses, network settings and even reset the print server to factory default settings but nothing worked. Eventually the print server was no longer even recognised by the software so now I am emailing Edimax for help but I suspect I shall soon be returning this non functional object to Amazon
