Canon Pixma iP1800/EN A4 4800x1200dpi USB 2.0 User Reviews:

Customer Rating: Summary: Cheap Printer? Comment: Great printer, great price - pity about the cost of cartridges!
This has to be the cheapest photo-quality printer on the market and it doesn't take long to find out why. A set of replacement cartridges costs almost as much as the printer! Canon have cunningly incorporated the print heads into the cartridges, making it impossible for "compatible" manufacturers to produce cheap copies. So they make their money from the cartridges and over the years you will pay for the printer many times over.
The European Commission is currently investigating printers. Perhaps they will decide that this is an unfair business practise? Maybe they will get around to doing something about it in my lifetime?
In the meantime I am refilling my cartridges. Not so simple, as the software somehow decides when a cartridge is finished and won't let the printer measure the ink levels. But there is a software tool that can be downloaded from the Internet (not from Canon!) that makes it possible to work round this. Somehow you get the feeling that every obstacle has been put in the way. Oh, and eventually you are going to get a message saying "Used ink tank is full" and Canon don't give you any help with sorting that one out either! I think this is going to be my LAST Canon printer.
Customer Rating: Summary: Bulky and temperamental Comment: Maybe I just got a 'lemon', but after less than a year it bluntly refuses to load paper and so is useless. Original ink cartridges cost the earth and it gets all-sniffy about compatibles, maintaining that the cartridges are empty when they plainly aren't. Also, more often than not, copies came out at a bit of an angle because the paper didn't sit straight in the paper feed.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great for the price. Comment: After going through two Epson printers in the space of eighteen months, I decided I had enough of that brand and looked around both online and in stores for a replacement. As I only really need a printer for invoices etc I settled on this machine and after operating it now for a few weeks I can safely say that it is well worth the money.
It was relatively easy to install, needed no extra calibrations, prints quickly and quietly. Yes, it goes through ink but no more than my epsons did and the cartridges are a couple of quid cheaper to replace, though I will refill mine.
A couple of people have marked it down because it doesn't come with the usb cable, luckily I had one already. A few years ago it was standard to have to purchase a plug separately from any electrical appliance one brought and you had to put it on yourself when you got home. Fortunately, we've moved on from there, but printer manufacturers should take note that the same principle should go with their printers ... include the usb cable and you'll have much happier customers!
Customer Rating: Summary: Good Comment: Needed to replace my printer (along with everything else!) after getting a Vista computer.
Was looking for a cheap and cheerful printer for moderate printing.
This is great value and easy to setup, I had no problems setting it up with Vista.
Comes with trial inks but these alone have lasted me a while so far.
Highly recommended budget printer.
(Need to buy a USB cable seperatly but only cost a few pounds)
Customer Rating: Summary: Wish I'd never bought it.... Comment: I bought this printer as it seemed good quality for the price...and it may well be...but, I haven't got that far yet.
A few things....the set up instruction sheet is USELESS. No words AT ALL, just a series of badly drawn pictures, which was fine until it came to actually putting the cartridges in.
Then I find that there is no USB cable provided.
If you're experienced with hardware/printers and are looking for a cheapie as an extra, this could well be the product for you. If you're a novice setting these things up - AVOID.
