Customer Rating: Summary: Unsuccessful Purchase Comment: Delivery of the printer was quick - but it was the wrong one. Collection arranged efficiently however was than told that the correct one was not available for over two weeks even though shown as in stock on the website.
Customer Rating: Summary: Good Printer Comment: I have had this printer for three weeks. Having had much bad experience with printers, professional and domestic, I bought this printer with some doubts, even having read some good reviews.
However, it is a very good printer. The print quality of photos on gloss paper is superb and is indistinguishable from professional prints. It follows, print quality on plain paper is faultless.
Unpacking, insertion of the print head, ink tanks and driver / software installation took about forty minutes. There were no problems encountered in the process. The utility software supplied with the printer is useful and worth having.
The mechanical construction could be better. I agree with the reviewer who feels that the cassette tray is rather flimsy, so, to some extent, is the guide on the rear paper feed. Knowing this though and taking reasonable care, will prevent any damage occurring.
The printer is capable of duplex printing, either automatically or manually. Manual duplex printing is performed simply by reorientation of the sheet(s) printed and re-inserting them in the rear feed. On automatic duplex, the ip4700 is rather slow to take the sheet back into the printer. This may be due to its waiting to ensure the ink has dried, in order to prevent smudging. There is a trick to duplex printing: I thought that sending a succession of files to the printer would result in the printer assuming that they were for duplex printing. (Duplex printing is set in the printer properties window.)This is not the case. I wanted to print (from IrfanView) a series of images, being part of an old instruction manual, so that the series of double sided sheets would staple together to make a booklet. I discovered that the way to do this is by using IrfanView in batch-print mode. Duplex printing of, e.g. a multi-page Word document, is straightforward. The explanations in the manual / Help for performing duplex printing could be improved.
So far, there has been no sign of the printhead blocking / clogging during periods of idleness lasting days. It remains to be seen what ink consumption will be like.
Customer Rating: Summary: Dodgy ink information Comment: I've had my printer for almost two months now and I'm still using the original cartridges even though the information panel has been telling me to change the coloured cartridges for about five weeks. Admittedly I don't prints lots of stuff but I do get the feeling that Canon are trying to encourage us to dispose of perfectly good cartridges way too early.
e.g. since the first warning signal regarding colured cartridges I have printed approximately 6 x A4 and 10 x A5 photographs along with numerous A4 documents with coloured and B&W printed text.
Apart from this issue, the printer delivers outstanding quality prints and the features of CD printing, duplex printing and an A4 paper tray make this the best desktop printer I have ever owned!
Customer Rating: Summary: Printer - Installing and use Comment: A simple diagram showing all parts and then with an easy to use diagrams to show method of installation of the whole system. for this reason I was disappointed
Customer Rating: Summary: Great inkjet printer if you don't want an all-in-one device. Comment: My primary interest in this printer was its ability to print directly on to the face of printable CDs and DVDs, a function that it performs superbly.
I had previously owned an aged Canon i865 which printed the same range of special media (photo paper, optical disks etc) but required an asortment of elaborate attachments to feed the media. Not so with the iP4700 which has a simple 'caddy' to feed optical disks and two separate paper feed paths; one for regular paper and one for photo paper, with the added advantage of the regular paper tray now being enclosed and keeping the paper flat and dust-free.
All-in-all I find the performance of this printer difficult to criticize, although I am still working with the originally supplied ink cartridges. The usage life of the OEM cartridges is certainly a most important factor and one that I'm not yet in a position to comment on. I haven't yet purchased replacements, the cost of which like all inkjet printers will probably require a major investment.
